To illustrate the importance of the motif of isolation in the book by Joseph Conrad we picked some book quotes with the short analysis of each. The contrast of Kurtz quotes and Marlow, sent to find him, is never emphasized directly, but we can feel that the intimidating and alien atmosphere of Africa influences both of them, hardening one of them and crushing another. ![]() But the other main character, Kurtz, caught in the similar situation – in utter isolation, surrounded by the native people in the “heart of darkness” chooses the other way to deal with loneliness: by becoming a local god, bloodthirsty and demanding. Still, his isolation is voluntarily and doesn’t seem to hurt him or affect him in any other way than inflicting slight sadness and nostalgia. It is easier for him to be comforted with the sound of waves which he describes as “the speech of a brother” than to get closer to any person from the crew. When he starts his story, we learn that in Africa he feels lonely almost constantly, comparing this land, the “heart of darkness” with London, the best city in the world for him. Even when we meet him for the first time, we feel the aura of loneliness around him: he is surrounded by the rest of the crew, but stays separated, sitting in the classical position of meditation. We see the main character, Marlow, as a captain of a river steamboat in the hostile and alien for him African land. The theme of isolation is the background of the whole book by Joseph Conrad.
